China Fir

(Cunninghamia lanceolata )
4 500 Ft

It is a very interesting tree reminding us of Araucaria, its leaves are relatively wide, pointed and slightly prickly at their ends. It usually reaches 8 to 10 meters in height in our country (Hungary), but could be a 50-meter tall giant tree in its own country! The winter foliage takes on a tinge of bronze, which changes quickly into bright green again when the milder weather sets in at spring! Its wood is extremely lightweight, suitable for a variety of purposes, so is planted for forestry as well, the most abundantly in China (the most common in pine plantations!) and in South America (Argentina, Brazil). Although, according to the literature, it does not like lime, has still been growing beautifully in our rather chalky soil for nearly a decade, in addition, has survived twice cruel cold winters of approx. minus 28 degrees! Some sprouts became frozen, it is true, however it was able to overcome this damage long since and has already grown out completely! Unlike any other plant in appearance, it can be an eye appealing, unique ornament in any garden!  USDA Zone 7a
