Japanese Raisin Tree

(Hovenia dulcis )
This plant is currently unavailable.

It is a deciduous tree, which can reach 10 meters in height and 7 meters in width in his old age and is widespread in East Asia. Following a July flowering, its raisin-like fruits are fully ripe by early October and their size can even be of 3 cm (1.2 inch). These hold the seeds, are actually the thickened fleshy fruit stalks, which are very sweet and fragrant containing high percentage of sugar, especially glucose, and sucrose as well as minor amounts of fructose, a significant amount of protein and vegetable fat. It can be consumed either dried or raw. A special interesting feature of this plant is that besides its sweet raisin-like fruit, the young leaves also contain natural saccharin, so they can be used as sweeteners! The plant is monoecious, self-pollinating, so by planting only one tree we can expect crop!
