Medlar: Nottingham

(Mespilus germanica `Nottingham`)
This plant is currently unavailable.

Nottingham Medlar is one of the once-popular fruits. The tree is somewhat similar in appearance to a spreading apple tree and the leaves have very attractive colour in autumn.
Nottingham Medlar is primarily grown for its culinary value. The fruit can be eaten fresh from mid-October then can be stored in a cool dark place for 3-4 weeks to allow them to "blet". The flesh should then be a soft squidgy mush, similar to a ripe date.
