Autumn Olive

(Elaeagnus umbellata)
This plant is currently unavailable.

It sprouts in downy-blue, then changes into green foliage, a showy shrub with pea-sized, fiery-red, edible fruits! An extremely resistant, tolerant, perfectly winter-hardy bush, grows up to approx. 4-4.5 metres height, but is excellent as a hedge too! It can grow beautifully in the wild, windy places and is not choosy in soils, moreover, because of its nitrogen-fixing ability, it can even improve it! Its small, yellow, star-like flowers, which bloom in May, are strongly sweet smelling! Even the entirely ripe fruits taste sweet-tart, delicious, containing approx. 8% of glucose and 4.5% of protein as well as are rich in vitamin A, C, and E, flavonoids and EFAs, the latter is very rare in the case of fruits!! Its lycopene content (which is 10 times higher, than in tomato!) helps to keep the prostate healthy! Its anticancer effect is being examined in depth too.
