Silver berry, Russian Olive, Oleaster, Wild Olive

(Elaeagnus angustifolia)
1 550 Ft

It is a native plant in vast area from the Mediterranean region to Mongolia, which grows into a smaller 5- to 8-meter tall tree. Its leaves are silvery white, downy and the small yellow flowers, which bloom in early summer, have very pleasant and intense aroma. It is a plant, which stands persistent drought very well. Needs sunshine, is an incredibly tolerant, undemanding, hardened plant, can grow on alkaline, sandy, stony or thin soils as well. Also tolerates the heavily polluted air in the cities extremely well. Enriches the soil in nitrogen, because its roots live in symbiosis with actinomycetes, which absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere. Because it is blooming nearly after the acacia, it is a valuable honey plant as well; its honey is light yellow and tasty. Due to slightly thorny shoots, with good possibility of trimming and very decorative, silvery-white foliage, it is excellent for a hedgerow too!

It has floury texture edible fruits, but the consumption is not very enjoyable, however the birds are pleased to eat it in winter!

Its curative effect is also known: the leaves are used for making antihypertensive tea, but not by brewing, it is done by 6-8 hours of soaking!
